MSG and FSN New York have been providing thrills for New York-area sports fans for over thirty years. Since 1969, MSG has been the window for some of the greatest and most memorable moments of the Knicks, the Rangers, the Yankees, and the Liberty.
FSN was born in 1976 and would grow to become known as the television home of the New York Islanders, New York Mets, New Jersey Nets and New Jersey Devils.
MSG's first telecast was on October 15, 1969 as it debuted with the New York Rangers home opener against the Minnesota North Stars to 18,000 cable television subscribers in lower Manhattan.
Since its inception, the Network has prided itself on being a leader in the sports television industry by staying on the cutting edge of sports technology. In 1998, MSG became the first regular provider of sporting events in High Definition Television (HDTV), telecasting home Knicks and Rangers games and later adding home games of the Yankees, Mets (on FSN), Liberty, Devils (on FSN), and Islanders (on FSN) to the fold. HDTV provides unsurpassed clarity in both audio and video, bringing the sights and sounds of live sporting events into the homes of MSG viewers like never before.
January 28, 1998, marked the official launch of FOX Sports Net - the country's first national, regional and local supplier of sports programming reaching more than 70 million homes nationwide through 21 owned and affiliated regional sports networks. Madison Square Garden Networks, which is comprised of MSG and the New York region's FSN New York, are each part of FOX Sports Net nationwide network of regional sports programming providers. MSG, through the New York-area FSN affiliate, produces the games of the New Jersey Devils, New Jersey Nets, and New York Islanders.
MSG takes an innovative and creative approach to every telecast, from the selection of announcers to the dedicated and professional staff of production personnel. Coverage regularly includes state-of-the art robotic cameras, super slow motion replays, attractive and easy-to-read graphics and original music selections.
The MSG Radio Network consists of a variety of radio programming in both English and Spanish that are produced by MSG and broadcast on local radio networks. The programming includes Knicks, Rangers, Liberty, and Jets game broadcasts, related pre- and post-game shows and sports talk and interview shows.
MSG has won a total of 52 New York Emmy awards, garnering a record of 30 nominations in 15 categories in 1995-96. Since 1986, the network has won 17 awards for "Outstanding Live Sports Coverage" and seven for "On Camera Achievement." In 2000, MSG was nominated for an all-time high 36 NY Emmy nominations. Among the ten Emmys won were three for Yankees baseball, two for Mets baseball and one each for Nets and Islanders telecasts.
On the national scene, the production team of Rangers hockey won the 1994 CableACE award in the "Live Event Coverage" category, becoming the first regional network to capture the prestigious award. On June 14, 1994, the MSG established single-game Nielsen ratings records (16.18 rating in the NY DMA) as 1,082,825 households (1,650,873 viewers) tuned in for coverage of Game Seven of the Stanley Cup finals between the Rangers and Vancouver Canucks.
Internationally, MSG's image campaign was awarded the Silver WorldMedal at the New York Festivals International TV Programming and Promotion awards in January of 2000. It was the second consecutive year that the "It's More Than Just a Game" campaign has won this award, bringing MSG Networks' International Film and TV Festivals awards total to nine.
In 1995, the Network launched its community outreach program to benefit children's organizations. The award-winning program is now part of Madison Square Garden's "Garden of Dreams Foundation." The announcers help to raise awareness for those organizations by visiting centers, hosting events, and conducting sports clinics. MSG Network supports all events through the production of public service announcements and extensive on-air publicity.
From the Knicks championships in 1970 and 1973 to the Rangers and Devils Stanley Cup victories to the Liberty's debut season in 1997, to the Yankees championship seasons in 1996, 1998,1999 and 2000, MSG has delivered quality sports television to an audience that has grown each year to a current total of over 8.2 million homes on MSG and over 6 million homes on FSN in the tri-state area and through satellite services in the United States, making MSG the largest and the oldest regional sports network in the country.
